CRITICAL TENT CONSIDERATIONS
PRICE – You do not need to spend a fortune to get the best backing tents. That’s why this list contains great options in a variety of price ranges.
If you backpack quite often, it probably makes sense to spend more for a quality product that will stay with you for many years. If you are on a limited budget, you can buy a cheap one with even fewer features.
WEIGHT – A few ounces here and there may not seem like a great deal, but keeping weight down is good for enjoying backpacking trips. Lightweight tents make hiking more enjoyable and fun-filled, and that’s what it is all about.
Your tent will be one of the heaviest items on your back so it’s a place to keep weight at a minimum.
The tents we recommend on this list offer the best blend between comfort, weight, and convenience, but if you are willing to make sacrifices to go even lighter, check out the ultra-light tents.
PROTECTION – A backpacking tent that does not protect against the elements is worse and even worthless. So be careful about extreme budget tents that you will find elsewhere. Every tent on this list will offer excellent storm protection to keep you dry, safe, and warm.
INTERIOR SPACE – Backpacking tents keep weight to a min by limiting interior space. One-person tents are best for dedicated solo hikers looking to travel light and fast.
Two-person tents tend to be very popular because they strike a good balance between interior space and weight.
A lot of two-person tents have enough space for two people and a few stuff sacks, with backpacks and extra gear kept in the vestibules.
If you want more interior space for camping then you may want to bump up against one size in tents. Just keep in mind that interior tent space is a tradeoff between weight and comfort.
More Feature You Must Check
SEASON RATING – Three-season shelters are very popular backpacking tents and the style that we are focusing on in this guide.
They are built for spring, fall, and summer trips where you will need to keep bad weather out while offering ventilation, which helps keep interior condensation to the minimum level.
Three-season tents usually can handle a little snow, but they are not made for heavy snow and even the harsh winter conditions.
DESIGN – A single design flaw can ruin an otherwise solid backpacking tent. Good tents keep design elements simple and comprise multiple doors, lots of headroom, air vents to reduce condensation, adequate vestibule space, and interior pockets for gear storage.
SETUP – Freestanding tents are generally preferable because they’re easy to use and quick to pitch. They come with a fixed pole system that can be set up anytime, anywhere, even on hard rock.
Non-freestanding tents use guy lines, stakes, and trekking poles for pitching.
They save weight by cutting out tent poles, but need more space and time to pitch, and will take more practice to master.
WALL CONSTRUCTION – Double-wall tents come with 2 separate parts – a rainfly and a mesh tent body. The mesh inner-tent acts as a fence from condensation that forms at the inside of the rainfly.
Single-wall tents reduce weight by chucking the mesh inner-tent, but that leaves hikers susceptible to interior condensation in cold and wet conditions.
Rubbing up against a wet tent interior is the pits, so mostly we recommend double-wall tents unless you backpack in arid, dry climates.
DOORS & VESTIBULES – If you plan on sleeping for 2 people in your tent, it is more comfortable to have two vestibules and two doors.
Having separate entrances will make sure that you are not climbing over a tent mate and two sets of gear for you to easily get in and out of the tent without disturbing your partner.
That is a big benefit, and it is why almost all of our tent recommendations have two or more doors and vestibules.
DURABILITY – The main trade-off with light in weight tents is that they are built by using thin materials, which tend to be less durable than the heavy-duty ones.
That said, ultralight tents will last for thousands of miles if they are handled with care.
Also, it is important to keep in mind that a rock or sharp stick will puncture any kind of tent fabric. If you are tough on gear and do not want to deal with light in weight materials, we personally recommend choosing one of our heavy recommendations built for long-lasting and durability or adding a footprint to increase the best backpacking tents.
FOOTPRINT – Most tents do not come with a footprint these days and many lightweight backpackers take them for granted.
The main benefit of a footprint is the offered durability to the floor of your tent. A footprint will defend your tent floor from abrasion, so it will last longer and might need only fewer repairs.
If you are willing to carry some extra weight in order to extend the life of your tent, consider picking up a footprint sized for your tent.
